【Medical Power Supply】Key Technology of Ventilator Power Supplies

Medical power supplies have a wide range of market applications. Various types of medical equipment often require the power supply system to provide stable, durable and uninterruptible power. APD (Asian Power Devices Inc.) has been deeply involved in the medical power supply industry for many years. The priority of our R&D team is providing the client with efficient and reliable power supply products. This is the design focus of our medical power systems.

With the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, the demand for the respiratory care products such as ventilators, oxygen concentrators, and humidifiers has increased significantly, the ventilators being particularly valued. Ventilator can be generally divided into two categories: home care and intensive care. According to the air supply requirement, they can be divided into three operation modes: positive pressure, negative pressure and high frequency.

In short, the design of the power supply unit (PSU) needs to be adjusted according to the requirements of different types of patients’ ventilator systems. APD specializes in the R&D of the medical power supplies. With the following key technology, APD provides the client with stable and reliable ventilator power supplies.

Peak power: our unique design enhances the overall reliability

Generally speaking, ventilators are motor application products. The most commonly encountered problems are the peak load and the overvoltage reversion risk caused by the counter electromotive force. In particular, ventilators used by severe patients will provide a significant pressure to supply a greater amount of air. Compared with home care ventilator, the power supply of the ventilators for patients  with severe illnesses needs to withstand a greater peak load for a longer period of time to meet the continuous system demands.

Compared with traditional design, APD uses a unique design for peak power. Not only can it effectively reduce the failure of the switch component but also the operating temperature of the power supply is lowered and the reliability is enhanced. The overall size reduction also helps improve the mobility while being used by the medical personnel. In addition, when over-voltage occurs on the output end of the power supply, APD has also developed a unique and patented over-voltage detection and protection circuit that can protect both the system and power supply from damage at the same time.

Our power supplies have medical-level dual certification, comply with IEC 60601/IEC 62368.

APD complies with the medical standard, IEC 60601, and meets the DO-160G standard of RTCA (Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics). The power supply can be used on the aircraft and guarantees a smaller current leakage than the medical standard in a general environment. In response to the current environmental protection trend, APD uses the energy consumption standard issued by both the USA and EU as the design objective to improve power supply efficiency. APD will also be able to meet the new IEC 62368 standard, which is expected to be introduced in 2020 after the integration of IT and AV categories.
