【Networking Power Supply】With Highest Lightning Protection: APD RPS Provides Safer Power Solutions
NEW!

Redundant Power System (RPS) is a crucial power supply device of servers and switches. What’s unique about it is that multiple power supplies can be used for synchronous operation. When one of the power supplies fails, the others can seamlessly take over its function to ensure normal operation of the powered equipment. In addition, RPS can be replaced without disconnecting the power, improving the stability and reliability of the equipment significantly.

RPS must pass rigorous international certification standards such as IEC 62368-1:2018 and IEC 61000-4-5. During the certification process, comprehensive safety evaluations must be conducted, in which one of the key tests is the Hi-pot test. The RPS from Asian Power Devices comply with the 2500Vdc electrical strength standard, and meet the highest requirements of Hi-pot tests for RPS. Users can use them with ease of mind and ensure that their equipment can still operate safely and reliably under extreme conditions.

APD RPS: Complies with the highest level of lightning test standard

In actual usage environments of RPS, lightning is one of the most important risks that causes equipment and power supplies to fail or malfunction. Therefore, it is extremely important to incorporate anti-lightning design into the designs of power supplies to ensure the reliability of equipment. The international standard IEC 61000-4-5 specifically defines anti-lightning design requirements for power supplies, and conducts corresponding testing and inspections.

During testing and inspection, several experimental classifications for lightnings apply, from the lowest level 1 wire-ground 0.5KV to the self-set level X; the basic requirement for lightning by the industry is level 3 (wire-wire 1KV, wire-ground 2KV). Based on its many years of in-depth research on lightning strikes, APD can meet the highest-level X lightning tests with the lightning voltage set reaching wire-wire 6KV and wire-ground 6KV. This breakthrough not only can improve the reliability of end devices for customers, it can also improve the competitiveness of their products, demonstrating the leading position of APD in the lightning safety design field.

Continuous development and innovation to improve production efficiency of products

In terms of lightning design, the industry often adopts methods such as adding varistors and gas tubes for absorption protection. For wire-ground (common mode) lightning designs, 600V and 1500V gas tubes are usually used. However, RPS with such designs have a problem, and that is they cannot pass Hi-pot tests directly: they require disassembling the gas tube circuit (such as removing the screws) in order to meet the requirements of the 2500Vdc electric strength test. Therefore, the gas tube circuit of the power supply must be disassembled first when assembling the power supply onto the equipment to perform the electric strength test, and then reassemble the power supply onto the equipment after the test is completed. Thus, equipment assembly plants need to perform cumbersome and time-consuming assembly processes in order to complete the assembly of the power supply.

The innovative R&D team of APD invested many years in dedicated research to tackle this challenge, and successfully developed a highly competitive RPS that not only can meet the 6KV strength requirement of lightning strikes, but also pass the Hi-pot tests directly, achieving the 2500Vdc standard. This innovative achievement has been incorporated into the internal design specifications of APD, completely solving the problem of past RPS unable to pass 2500Vdc Hi-pot test directly. Not only that, this technological breakthrough also vastly simplified the production process of equipment assembly plants, and therefore improved production efficiency significantly.

APD’s RPS have a wide power range from 70W to 600W, they also have multiple RPS related patents. These power supplies adopted the safest lightning designs and comply with the 6KV standard; they also have more than 10 years of usage life. These features have made APD’s RPS products the first choice for numerous global customers. Moving forward, APD will continue to provide customers with the most reliable RPS products with the most market competitiveness.
